A CALL FOR (a) NEW DIRECTORS AND (b) NEW BOARD SUBCOMMITTEE MEMBERS:

Since 1879 the Order of Saint John of God in Ireland have been leaders and innovators in providing services to the most vulnerable children and adults in Ireland, the UK, Korea, Malawi and other places.

Saint John of God Community Services clg is a Registered Charity. It is one of the largest service providers of its kind in the State. Our dedicated staff of 2,500 support almost 8,000 children and adults with intellectual disability and mental ill health in Ireland. Saint John of God Community Services clg is part of the wider Saint John of God Hospitaller Services Group.

Our services, funded by the HSE, are provided by way of a Service Arrangement. Residential services for people with intellectual disability are regulated by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA). Our Board and executive management team are committed to providing and developing our services in accordance with current legislation, national policy and international best practice.

Expressions of interest are now being sought from suitably qualified individuals willing to serve in either of two roles (a) as a director of SJOGCS or (b) as a non-director on one of the four standing subcommittees of the board. We would especially welcome expressions of interest from individuals with professional qualifications in Mental Health and/or Intellectual Disability. Our constitution allows for non-directors to serve on our committees and our experience of this arrangement has been really positive. The committees are;

  • Quality, Safety and Regulatory Compliance
  • Audit, Risk (non-clinical) and Compliance
  • Finance and Human Resources
  • Nominations, Performance and Governance

As well as possessing the relevant professional expertise and experience, applicants should also have a personal interest in the people we support and an affinity with the values of Saint John of God and supporting people to experience an enriched quality of life.

As a registered charity, our board and committee members do not receive any payment for their services.

THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS:

Committee terms of reference will be shared with candidates who are invited to discuss their interest further.

Competency Framework

Non-director members of subcommittees – an explanatory note.

The Board of SJOGCS has four subcommittees, which are;

  • Quality, Safety and Regulatory Compliance
  • Audit, Risk (non-clinical) and Compliance
  • Finance and Human Resources
  • Nominations, Performance and Governance

The membership of each subcommittee includes at least two directors of the Board and in the case of two subcommittees there is one member who is not a director and is not connected with the company. This is a relatively new arrangement, and it has been very successful.

The Board has decided to provide for having at least one non-director member on each of the subcommittees. The same competency framework and the same governance code that apply for board directors will apply for membership of subcommittees. Subject to that, appointments as non-director members of a specific subcommittee will be based on qualifications and experience directly relevant to the functions of that subcommittee. Appointments will be for a three-year term.
